American Council on Exercise Announces
Change to Personal Trainer Certification Exam

Effective in May, 2004, candidates sitting for ACE’s personal trainer exam will have an added component: A written simulation.

The written simulation is designed to evaluate the certification candidate’s ability to apply training principles to real life training situations. Taking the form of two extended case studies, the written simulation will assess the candidate’s decision making and problem solving skills.

Concurrent with the change to the ACE examination, Exercise ETC has revised its ACE Approved Personal Trainer Exam Prep Program to add a “written simulation” module. This new module will use a combination of interactive lecture and specially designed training aids to prepare the exam candidate for this new exam component. Exercise ETC will be offering these programs this April in:

  • Atlanta
  • Boston
  • Chicago
  • Cleveland
  • Denver
  • Detroit
  • Ft Lauderdale
  • Kansas City
  • Los Angeles
  • New York City
  • Philadelphia
  • San Francisco
  • Seattle
  • Washington, DC

The cost for these programs is $199.00 and includes our “Free Retake” guarantee: If you don’t pass the ACE Personal Trainer Exam after completing our training class, you may retake the class for free. For details, visit our website at: www.exerciseetc.com or call us at 1-800-244-1344.

A Little Group Fitness
Yields Big Results

Twenty-six women in their sixties completed this study of the physiological and psychological results of a Group Fitness program. The women participated in a 40 minute group fitness program twice a week for 12 weeks; the program consisted of 40 minutes of cardio and strength exercises, at mild to moderate intensity.

The women were evaluated before and after the program to determine their body mass index, skin-fold thickness, resting blood pressure and total cholesterol. The researchers also assessed the participants’ times for the “chair rise,” “up and go” test, 20 meter walk, and other functional measures, as well as their Life Satisfaction Index (LSI).

Following the 12 week exercise program the women saw improvements to their body mass index, skin-fold measurements, resting blood pressure, timed chair rise, timed ‘up and go’ test and 20 meter walk. They also showed improved ability to lift a 1 and 2 kg bag up onto a shelf, as well as improved ability in stair walking. Significantly, the exercisers also improved their scores on the Life Satisfaction Index. Although cholesterol levels did not lower significantly, the researchers concluded that both functional and psychological improvements occurred as results of this moderate intensity, minimal frequency exercise program.

Diet & Eating Patterns
Among Pre-adolescents
Similar to Those of Adults

This study assessed dietary behavior and body weight changes for almost 15,000 9-14 year old boys and girls between 1996 and 1999. The questionnaire was completed by the children themselves and looked at: the types of foods eaten; frequency of dieting behavior; binge eating patterns; exercise habits; changes to body weight and height. Changes over the time period were calculated as a function of BMI and normalized for normal growth expectations.

No surprises here: The results demonstrated that children who dieted tended to be heavier than those who did not. Although more girls engaged in binge eating behaviors, (with the expected weight gain to accompany the behavior) boys who did so also gained significantly more weight than non-bingers. As expected, girls on diets outnumbered the boys at a rate of almost 2:1.

The authors concluded that, as the only prospective report on the relationship of dieting behavior to subsequent weight gain, dieting for young children and adolescents may have detrimental value. There is also, apparently, a case to be made that adult diet and eating habits are formed early in life.
