ETC's Review of
The fitness chain Curves for Women has grown in popularity across the nation. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, on behalf of The American Council on Exercise, conducted a study to determine how much exercise the workout provides. The typical Curves workout consists of two full circuits of resistance training on hydraulic equipment interspersed with walking or jogging. Sessions generally take 25 minutes and are followed by five minutes of stretching. The study monitored 15 women aged 25 to 56 through two Curves workouts. The average session burned 184 kcals and heart rates averaged 75% of age-predicted maximum. The Curves workout was a moderate-intensity workout, equivalent to walking 30 minutes at 3.5 miles per hour. A Curves workout, performed most days of the week, meets the current minimum exercise guidelines, but clients wanting to lose weight will need 60 to 90 minutes of exercise on most days. The Curves workout can be alternated with higher intensity cardiovascular activities to increase aerobic and health benefits. Researchers also noted that compared to walking, Curves offered a better full-body workout. Porcari,

March 20, 2005. Long-Term
Vitamin E Supplementation Previous short term studies on Vitamin E supplementation have not confirmed any benefit in preventing cancer or cardiovascular events. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether long-term supplementation with vitamin E decreases the risk of cancer or major cardiovascular events. Approximately 4,000 patients 55 or older with cardiovascular disease and diabetes served as subjects for the study which was an extension of the initial Heart Outcomes Prevention Evaluation [HOPE] trial. Subjects took either a daily dose of natural source vitamin E (400 IU) or a placebo for an average of 7 years. The results
of the study showed no differences in cancer incidence
or major cardiovascular events between those taking Vitamin E and those
taking a placebo. The study found that higher rates of heart
failure occurred in those taking Vitamin E compared to placebo.
