Self-paced Walking Program
Helps Diminish the Urge to Smoke

Smokers find it very difficult to kick the habit, but recent research indicates that exercise may aid smoking cessation. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of a 1-mile self-paced walk on the urge to smoke following temporary smoking abstinence.

Fifteen smokers who averaged 15 cigarettes daily served as subjects. Following 15 hours of smoking abstinence, participants on alternating days either exercised or sat passively. On the exercise days the subjects participated in a 1 mile self paced walk that averaged 15-20 minutes in length.

The study showed a rapid and measurable positive effect on the urge to smoke in the exercise group. In addition, the exercise group waited an average of 83 minutes for their next cigarette compared with 26 minutes for the non-walkers.

The results of this study are consistent with several other similar studies published in the last few years. According to researchers, the dopamine pathway triggered by exercise appears to mimic the effect of smoking on the brain. Both nicotine and exercise send feel-good messages to the brain. Fitness Professionals can use this information to encourage clients to use exercise when a cigarette craving hits.

Alcohol Consumption Is No Boon
for Breastfeeding Exercisers

Studies show that about one fourth of breast-feeding women are advised by health care professionals to have a drink before breast-feeding. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not alcohol consumption affects the hormonal response in lactating women.

Seventeen nursing women performed two milk pumping sessions. One session followed the consumption of orange juice and 0.4 grams per kilogram of vodka. Another session followed the consumption of an equal volume of just orange juice.

Following the consumption of alcohol, the nursing moms not only took longer to release their milk but also produced less. The study found oxytocin levels decreased by more than half in the immediate hours following alcohol consumption. Oxytocin is the hormone primarily responsible for milk production and release.

This study suggests that recommending alcohol as an aid to lactation may be counterproductive. While the alcohol may relax the mother, the hormonal changes disrupt lactational performance resulting in a slower milk release and diminished milk supply. Fitness Professionals should share this information with their lactating clients.
